The total area<br \/>\nis nearly 450 acres. The island is dominated by Mynydd Enlli<br \/>\n(summit 500 ft. above O.D.) which falls precipitously to the<br \/>\nsea on the E. The remainder of the surface is nearly flat, and<br \/>\nis good agricultural land, but the S. part is very exposed.<br \/>\nA survey by Whitchurch made in 1790 although drawn to<br \/>\na small scale shows about 12 dwellings at the foot of the W.<br \/>\nslope of the mountain near the 130 ft. contour; of these only<br \/>\nCarreg-bach (at SH 11982202) survives. A large building<br \/>\napparently about 150 ft. E. of Hen-dy (at SH 12052223) is<br \/>\nnoted as \u2018ruins of church barn etc.\u2019; it has left no trace. In<br \/>\n1806 it is recorded that there were 12 to 15 houses occupied<br \/>\nby about 60 people \u00a0mainly dependent on fishing; in 1960<br \/>\nthere were seven permanent residents. Between 1870 and 1875<br \/>\nthe farms were rebuilt, and form an interesting example of<br \/>\n19th-century agricultural planning. \u00a0Carreg and Plas-bach\u00a0formed separate units, but the remaining eight were built as\u00a0semi-detached houses, each pair with outbuildings set round a\u00a0shared yard.<\/p>\n<p>The island was an important place of pilgrimage and<br \/>\nmonastic settlement throughout the Middle Ages, possibly<br \/>\nfrom as early as the 6th century, but apart from a ruined tower<br \/>\nbelonging to the monastery (<a title=\"(1518)  The Abbey of Enlli or St. Mary of Bardsey\" href=\"http:\/\/www.crwydro.co.uk\/aberdaron\/?page_id=240\">No. 1518<\/a>) little remains visible<br \/>\nexcept a few loose pieces of dressed stone, a fragmentary<br \/>\ninscribed cross-slab and a medieval gravestone.
