(1521) The old Church of St. Merin

(1521) The OLD CHURCH OF ST. MERIN stood in a small enclosure 200 yds. N.E. of Ty-Mawr. It is stated, on unknown authority, that it fell into decay after the Reformation.1

The walls of the church now stand to a maximum height of 3 ft. and are obscured by vegetation. The building measured approximately 31 ft. 6 ins. by 16 ft. 9 ins. internally; the thickness of the walls is uncertain; in the N. wall, 3 ft. from the W. end, is an entrance 4 ft. wide. The N.W. and S.E. angles appear to contain the bases of solid piers of masonry 3 ft. square and 6 ft. E.-W. by 3 ft. respectively. From the N. wall a cross-wall 5 ft. long projects inwards 7 ft. from the E. end, separating the body of the church from a rubble filled hollow in the N.E. corner.
The churchyard measures 25 yds. square externally, the interior being above the level of the surrounding field. The entrance was at the W. end of the N. side.

Condition: reduced to lowest courses and overgrown.
